Instagram Comment Reply vs DM: Which Should You Automate?

A Comment reply and a DM solve different parts of the same conversation. Treating them as two clear customer actions makes campaign design easier than thinking in API terminology such as public and private replies.

What a Comment reply is

A Comment reply is posted beneath the original Instagram comment. It is useful for acknowledging the person, confirming that the request was seen, or telling them to check their inbox.

What a DM is

A DM is sent to the commenter in Instagram's messaging experience. It is the better place for a longer response, a resource, or a link button configured in the campaign.

When to use both

Use both when the public acknowledgement improves the comment experience and the real value is delivered in the DM. A short Comment reply such as “Sent—check your DMs” can set the expectation while the inbox message contains the useful next step.

Keep reply volume in mind

In AP3K, each successfully sent Comment reply and each successfully sent DM counts as one automated reply. If one matching comment triggers both actions, that campaign run uses two automated replies. Failed or skipped actions do not count.
