Instagram DM Automation: Setup, Limits and Testing
Instagram DM automation sends a configured private message after an eligible interaction. For a comment-to-DM campaign, a person comments on your post or Reel, your rule checks the trigger, and the automation sends the response you prepared. Start with one useful link and a clear promise.
1. Use the right Instagram account
Connect a Business or Creator account you are authorized to manage. Check the username and message permissions before building a campaign. Authorize through the connection flow; do not give your Instagram password to another person. A saved connection alone does not prove that every messaging permission is ready.
Business and Creator account requirements →2. Choose the interaction and the reply
Use a Post automation for a comment on a post or Reel. A public reply appears below the post; a DM is private. Enable the actions your offer needs. A keyword such as GUIDE is useful when the caption promises a resource. Any Comment is a broader rule, so use it deliberately.
Keyword rules versus any comment →3. Count actions, not just people
The Free plan includes 500 automated actions per month. If 100 people each receive one public reply and one DM, that is 200 sent actions. Additional messages add usage. Paid plans increase capacity; they do not promise unlimited sends. Review current allowances before advertising a campaign.
Compare plans and current allowances →4. Test the whole journey
Publish the reviewed rule, then leave a fresh comment from another Instagram account. Check the public reply, inbox and message requests separately. Open the final link inside Instagram and complete any optional steps. Test unrelated text too. The editor preview is not a delivery receipt, and a sent DM is not a sale.
Set up and test comment-to-DM automation →5. Diagnose the first failed step
If nothing runs, check the account, selected post, enabled status and keyword. If a public reply appears without a DM, inspect message permissions and the recorded failure. Duplicate protection, usage limits and platform rules can affect delivery. Change one cause at a time and repeat the test.
