Instagram Automation Replies Publicly but Sends No DM: What to Check
A public reply proves that one action occurred. It does not prove the private message was sent or received. Start with that distinction and inspect the DM path without rebuilding a trigger that may already be working correctly.

Confirm what the campaign is supposed to send
Open the exact automation and verify that Send a DM is enabled, the final message is present, and the configured links are valid. Reply to comment and Send a DM are separate actions in AP3K. A public-reply-only setup is not a delivery failure.
Compare the active configuration with the version you tested. If you edited a draft without saving the intended changes, the live behavior may still reflect the earlier configuration. Inspect the actual current state rather than relying on memory.
Check whether the flow is waiting for a step
If an opening DM is enabled, the recipient may need to use its continuation control before the final message. If a follow request is enabled, inspect that stage and its verification behavior. Missing the final link is different from missing every private message.
Read the receiving account's thread in order. Write down the last visible message and the action taken after it. This is more useful than saying the DM does not work without identifying where the sequence stopped.
Inspect connection readiness and action evidence
Check the connected Instagram account and the permissions or readiness shown for DMs. Comments and messaging are different capabilities, so a working public response does not establish that every messaging permission is healthy.
Review the available campaign activity for failures, skips, or an attempted private action. Preserve the visible error and timing. Avoid reconnecting repeatedly without a reason; first identify whether the evidence points to permissions, configuration, or recipient visibility.
Retest from the recipient's side
Use a fresh comment from another account after correcting one issue. Inspect both the inbox and message requests. Open any required continuation controls, then verify the final destination. Do not repeatedly send unrelated messages to a real customer while experimenting.
- DM action is enabled and configured.
- Optional stages are understood and completed.
- DM readiness is checked separately from comments.
- Activity and recipient evidence are compared.
- The second test uses a new eligible interaction.
