A comment, a delivered message, a link visit and a purchase are different events. AP3K’s automation analytics helps you see the first interactions and link activity, but a click is not evidence that someone bought. This guide gives you a practical measurement plan, explains the limits of follower attribution and shows how to connect an Instagram offer to the results in your own website or store.
Start with a measurement dictionary
Use the same definitions every time you compare campaigns. AP3K records eligible automation trigger events and deduplicates repeated webhook deliveries. One person can trigger an automation more than once, so trigger count and unique recipients can differ.
The automation’s click rate divides unique tracked-link visitors by unique people who triggered that automation. It is not a delivery-based click-through rate. A delivery failure, an unopened DM or an unfinished opening step can all affect this denominator. Inspect message results separately before diagnosing the offer.
| Metric | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Triggers | Recorded events entering the automation | Every event became a delivered DM |
| Unique link visitors | Tracked recipients whose links were opened | Every tap was a different person |
| Destination clicks | Recipients who opened each destination | A checkout or booking completed |
| Confirmed follows | Verified non-follower-to-follower transitions | All new followers on the Instagram account |
Put the destination in a link button
Add your HTTPS destination to a link button in the final DM or another supported automation response. AP3K creates an opaque redirect for tracking and sends the recipient to the original destination. Do not put private tokens, customer details or secret account links in a marketing URL.
Use the shortest useful label, such as ‘View sizes’, ‘Open checklist’ or ‘Book a call’. Test both the button and the destination on mobile. A working redirect cannot repair a broken landing page, expired download, confusing form or out-of-stock offer.
Compare destinations with the right limits in mind
Link performance groups tracked URLs and counts one click per recipient per destination. Repeated taps do not increase that unique count. The all-time automation click total counts a recipient once across the automation, so adding destination totals can produce a larger number when one recipient visits several links.
Destination-level counts begin with the tracking update; they cannot reconstruct which old link was clicked before that evidence was recorded. Known preview bots and prefetch requests are excluded, but bot detection is imperfect. A forwarded tracked link can still be credited to the original recipient. Treat these figures as campaign indicators, not identity verification or an audited sales ledger.
Add campaign tags for your website analytics
You can add UTM parameters to the destination before saving the button. For example, use a source of instagram, a medium of dm and a campaign name that describes the offer. Keep a consistent naming convention so two editors do not split one launch across several labels.
An illustrative destination is https://example.com/checklist?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=lighting_launch. Replace the example domain and path with your actual page. If the URL already has a question mark, add parameters with an ampersand. Test the final URL before publishing. AP3K preserves the destination query parameters through the redirect.
In your website analytics, compare tagged visits with completed forms or purchases. Your analytics consent settings, browser restrictions and cross-device behavior can create differences between systems. Record these limitations rather than forcing two tools to show identical counts.
Why follower counts can look incomplete
AP3K credits a confirmed follow only when Instagram supplies a known not-following state and later a following state within the attribution window. Existing followers do not count as new conversions. Unknown or inaccessible profile data is not treated as false, and pressing an ‘I followed’ button is not itself proof of a follow.
AP3K rechecks eligible observed contacts in the background so another message is not always required to record the transition. API availability, queue capacity and missing baseline data still limit what can be verified. These counts describe observed automation conversions, not a list of everyone who followed your account.
For account-wide growth, compare Instagram’s own follower total over time. Net growth also includes unfollows, so it is a different measurement. A request to message every new follower requires a supported follow event and appropriate Meta access; AP3K does not currently offer that trigger. Invite people to send a welcome keyword instead when you want an explicit, supported way to start a conversation.
A weekly review you can actually act on
Start with delivery errors. If the intended messages were not sent, fix the connection, permissions or configuration before rewriting the offer. Next inspect the gap between trigger recipients and link visitors. The opening message, unnecessary questions and unclear button text are all reasonable things to review.
When link visitors arrive but few complete your form, inspect the landing page: does it match the promise, load well on a phone and ask only necessary questions? Change one meaningful element at a time. Export the daily chart and record what changed, so a later comparison has context.
- Keep an explicit definition of a lead, booking and paid customer.
- Compare similar offers and time windows instead of isolated percentages.
- Treat a small sample as a reason to observe more, not a guarantee that a variant wins.
- Use only the contact information required for the experience you explained.
Frequently asked questions
Does AP3K count every tap? No. The main click metric counts unique recipients, and each destination also counts a recipient once.
Do I need to enable a separate tracking switch? Supported HTTPS automation link buttons are tracked automatically. Plain text links are not the same as configured link buttons.
Can I see revenue in automation analytics? These metrics do not confirm purchases. Use your checkout or booking records and campaign-tagged website analytics.
Why is follow conversion a dash? Without verified non-follower observations there is no reliable denominator. A dash communicates unavailable evidence rather than claiming a measured zero.
